The All Blacks are the New Zealand national rugby team. It is as popular to us as football (soccer) is in Europe. New Zealand first international rugby team was selected in 1884. The All Blacks have rated amongst the best in the world closely matched with Australia, South Africa and England. In 1987 New Zealand won the world cup that was hosted between Australia and New Zealand. A great set of matches and some very proud moments for us Kiwis. It was as recent as 1995 when the New Zealand rugby game was declared an "Open Game" removing many restrictions on benefits and payments. This introduced the Professional rugby player. If you ever wanted to know how the concept of using an oval ball came from... Up until the 1860s a leather ball was used with a pigs bladder on the inside giving the ball an oval appearance. Back then the ball was actually much rounder than todays.
